Knobbly tyres

I now have knobbly tyres on the bike! Dunlop D908 on the back and D907 on the front. So much better off road.

On road handling is very novel though - it feels plain weird trying to get it to lean over at all. It's like the tyre consists of three flat surfaces - upright, leant over a bit, leant over a bit more. I guess that's knobbly tyres for you. No doubt I'll get used to it and it will smooth out as they wear a bit. Posted by Picasa

Not related to today's meet up at all, but I've just been shown http://www.wayfaring.com
. I've now set up a map, with pictures on some of the way points, of the couple of byways I've been over in Surrey. The link is over there on the left.

Met up with some people from the Honda trail bike forum this afternoon (http://www.xrv.org.uk/). They all seemed remarkably sane which is good to know as I'm planning to meet up again when they go on their ride over Salisbury Plain in March.

I have to say that for people from a trail bike forum, there were a lot of suspiciously clean bikes!

We met up at the Raven in Hook. Didn't even know the place existed until now. Haven't a clue what the beer was like but the food looked good. Posted by Picasa

The Sun, Bentworth

The clan gathers for the Good Beer Guide pub selection trip. on Saturday.

If I have anything to do with it, one pub that won't be making it into the GBG is the Sun at Bentley.

About six of us walk into an empty pub. Every table has reserved on it.

So we mill around for a bit whilst ordering drinks, grumbling to ourselves. The bar staff ignore us apart from when we placed our order so we sit at a random table.

A few moments later, one of the staff tells us we can't there and waves airily at a table across the floor. We point out that this one, in fact all of them, are reserved so how on earth are we to know which table we can sit at. She stares had at her list for a few moments and then points at another table for us.

Unsurprisingly, there is more grumbling from us. However the land lady then comes over to so perhaps things are ok after all. No such luck: instead she tells us off for being rude to her staff.

At this point I give up and tell the land lady that I'd rather go for a walk outside than stay in that place. "Good" she says as I flunce out of the door.

The others follow behind me in due course. Posted by Picasa

Not a fine day out

Didn't get out anywhere on the bike this time - I seemed to have a large supply of household tasks instead.

John Wilkinson popped in on the way back from his mothers so I got to see his new dog - some sort of lurcher thing. It didn't half give the cats a fright.

I did get out to try flying the kite (5m Beamer II) but there wasn't enough wind in the local park. Ho hum

I figured with this off roading lark, it might be worth trying some puncture repair stuff before I end up having to push the bike back somewhere before I can get it repaired. Being pretty useless mechanically, there's no point trying tyre levers so I've just ordered some Ultraseal off ebay. Not ideal for tubes but should be of some help.

I also fancy a set of heavy duty tubes and a pair of Dunlop D908s. Obviously it makes sense to get these fitted before I use the Ultraseal, rather than wait until my current tyres wear out and buy two lots of Ultraseal. Makes perfect sense to me.

Another Fine Day Out

I had to wait in this morning for the new freezer to turn up. I decided to try and fix one of the kick space heaters whilst I was waiting. Wish I hadn't bothered, despite three hours work, the stupid thing is only marginly less knackered than it was before.

Anyway, I've been over a few green lanes in Surrey this afternoon: down the Old Guildford Road, over Puttenham Common and then down some tracks near Shere.

I found most of the tracks by checking the list of BOATs on the Surrey CC website Posted by Picasa

My Day Off

It's official, I now have Wednesdays off work. Hooray. I hope you were all slaving away at the office whilst I was pootling around the byways of Salisbury Plain.

Actually, it wasn't so much pootling as sliding around in the mud, almost getting stuck. A big bike, tyres clogged with mud and a bloke who doesn't know what he's doing aren't the ideal combinations.

Minded you, I did have a bike covered in mud by the time I'd finished, which impressed me, even if not anybody else. Posted by Picasa
